I am using rc1 at the moment and I created a simple process in the activiti-modeler. Unfortunately, I had to go to the XML directly to add information like the formKey and assignments, but the changes I made in the XML do not show up in the model. Obviously it is critical that the model stays up to date as it is the primary communication medium for the process, so is this something that is addressed in 5.0 or am I just not updating the model correctly in the modeler?

That is sonethign which we are working very hard on. In 5.0, the Designer (Eclipse) already has these capabilities.
And we are currently trying to get that into the Modeler too. The next step is to eleminate the need for manual roundtripping by using Activiti Cycle to get it from the Modeler to the Designer and vice-versa.
