I see in the interface where you can define categories, and put documents into those categories. However, I don't see a way to allow users to browse through these categories. Is this possible?

I would really like a list of categories to appear on the main page. It would seem that this would be needed on many ecm implementations.

You are right, you cannot yet browse via categories (although you can search using them), this has been added as a task for development:
http://www.alfresco.org/jira/browse/AWC-237
