Pre-edit file's attributes before importing by webdav,ftp ?

Hi,
I want to pre-edit some attributes of files (permission (group, user for sharing), description, title …) before copy this file to Alfresco using Webdav,FTP,or SMB mount. How can I do this?
Pls help, just because I want to write a portal that adds additional information to files automatically.

I'm not sure how you can "pre-edit" meta-data, but it is possible to add rules that will fire when documents are added via CIFS/WebDav/FTP to folders and extract the meta-data or set the meta-data at that point in the process. There is an action to auto-extract common meta-data fields from common filetypes which you can setup as a rule, and you can use the Alfresco JavaScript API to write a script that will set property values during a rule.

Can I control what metadata Alfresco will get from document when it's imported to the repository ?
For ex: description, author … of PDF, DOC, XLS, ODT…

Permissions on a document can also be set using the JavaScript API in Alfresco 1.4 (note that currently the Alfresco 1.3 JavaScript API can only query permissions, rather than setting them).
