Activiti on Ubuntu Server 10.04 install guide

activist

Hi All,

May i know where can i find the step by step guidance in deploying Activiti please ?

I have setup the Ubuntu server with Ant, Java and Tomcat 6 but so far got no clue where to do next ?

I've read the .properties file and seems that nothing that i should touch.

Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You should configure build.properties for choose database (and configure database properties if is not h2)

And with "ant demo.setup" you obtain and install all activiti.

Here there is all information:

http://activiti.org/userguide/index.html

configure build.properties for choose database (and configure database properties if is not h2)

I prefer to use the default one i guess in this case H2 is the DB name ?

jcosano

Name of database is define by name of build.xxx.properties in setup folder…

then for H2 is h2 (I think that h2 come by default).

activist

thanks for the reply man,

however I found out that in order to try this software features and functionality it is very complex with minimal information on the website like the following:

The easiest target to get started is demo.setup. That target will<br><br>Fetch the library dependencies for the examples<br>Install the H2 in ${activiti.home}/apps/h2<br>Start the H2 database<br>Create the Activiti tables in the database<br>Download Tomcat if not available in the ${downloads.dir}<br>Install Tomcat in ${activiti.home}/apps/apache-tomcat-${tomcat.version}<br>Create an Activiti configuration jar<br>Install Activiti Engine into Tomcat, which includes libraries and configurations<br>Insert the demo users and groups in the Activiti identity tables (see below)<br>Deploy the example processes to the Activiti Engine DB<br>Deploy the REST interface webapp into tomcat<br>Download the Activiti Modeler webapp to ${activiti.home}/webapps<br>Deploy the Probe, Explorer and Modeler webapps into tomcat.<br>Start tomcat

So each of the line above needs to be elaborated into meaningful step by step to encourage people to try this software.
– my 2 cents

I'll try to extract the downloaded zip files in my linux server and then performs ant build.xml and hopefully all is good.

sifter

I agree with activist's point.
Clearer documentation on the installation process would be helpful.

activist

Hi sifter, yes we're not alone here, i believe there are many others who also face difficulty in trying to test this software.

winko

I think there is à lot of progression to be made, creating either an install script or à good how to! I'm willing to help!!! Who joins me?

+1 I'm in Winko.

jbarrez

It is our goal to make the demo setup as simple as possible, for everyone!

Can you elaborate on what exactly you believe is missing from the documentation?

activist

jbarrez,

Thanks for your reply, I was having problem in running the demo starting from preparing the prerequisite. (I'm still newbie in this area).
therefore I usually follow step by step guide in deploying Linux application.

winko

Activist I think you're right on the spot in describing the pain, perhaps we can create a step by step guide in deploying the application. A good starting point might be the documentation of Joram.

Winko

activist

yes Winko, I thought I'm the only one who is so dumb not being able to use this software 🙂

winko

I'll make a (Ubuntu) virtual machine tonight especially for the purpose of making screenshots… Then we'll have to figure out how to install the program(s). Installing the prerequisites (JDK, ANT and Eclipse) are no problem (supossingly using the ubuntu software center), I'll make screenshots of that and let you know when I'm ready!

yes please, that'd be very great help to the community.

winko

Just created a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Virtual Machine.
Will start installation tomorrow!

buetti

Hi all,

I created a topic two weeks ago similar to this one (http://forums.activiti.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=456).

I have also an issue with installing activiti in an existing tomcat environment. I have a fresh ubuntu 10.10 server, install tomcat with apache2 at installation routine, install java libraries und export the $JAVA_HOME variable. I tried to use mysql as default database and customize the build.properties and also the build.xml itself. In the demo.setup target I delete the targets tomcat.install. The installation went fine, and the activiti packages are deployt to /etc/tomcat6/webapps. But if I try to call localhost:8080/activiti-cycle or any other activiti package I just get an tomcat error messge, that the resource isn't available. And I still have trouble with getting activit running…. ;(

@Winko:Maybe this is an aspect you can consider?

Ben

hm.. interesting to I wonder if ubuntu is supported in this Activiti install, since there are quite a few of us who got into problem.

buetti

I get it! Unfortunately I tried the wrong Tomcat_Home folder in the build.xml. I changed it to /var/lib/tomcat6 and no it is working. What I did:

- changed the build.properties (to change the DB to mysql)
- changed the mysql.properties (user and passwort)
- changed the build.xml (delete the targets "tomcat.install" and create.h2)
- create the activiti DB and the DB user in mysql
- export the $JAVA_HOME
- run "ant demo.setup"
- have fun!

activist

wow that sounds like great news, I'll give that a try and let you know how it goes.

winko

Did a lot of searching and reading last night, will give the installation a try tonight!

I installed activiti in an ubuntu vm and access it via network. It works fine until the user on the activiti server logs off –> i just get a white/blank page in my browser no matter which site (activiti-* or tomcat index) was selected. After reconnecting to the server via ssh it works again.

Does anyone have the same problem? It seems to be connected with tomcat. It starts with

INFO: Undeploying context []<br>Nov 26, 2010 2:56:25 AM org.apache.catalina.session.StandardManager doUnload<br>SEVERE: IOException while saving persisted sessions: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /home/actuser/activiti-5.0.rc1/apps/apache-tomcat-6.0.29/work/Catalina/localhost/_/SESSIONS.ser (No such file or directory)<br>java.io.FileNotFoundException: /home/actuser/activiti-5.0.rc1/apps/apache-tomcat-6.0.29/work/Catalina/localhost/_/SESSIONS.ser (No such file or directory)<br> at java.io.FileOutputStream.open(Native Method)<br> at java.io.FileOutputStream.<init>(FileOutputStream.java:209)<br> at java.io.FileOutputStream.<init>(FileOutputStream.java:99)<br> &hellip;

Could it be something with PATH variables?

activist

markus, please edit your init.d file /etc/rc.d/init.d to start the server process.

source:http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxTutorialInitProcess.html

let me know if this is working for you.

markushbm

I edited my original post and will give it a try tomorrow. However, thanks for your answer. Doesn't tomcat run with root privileges if starting on init?

activist

markus, I'm also newbie in this area, but I foundthis article

<a href="http://wiki.apache.org/tomcat/HowTo#How_to_run_Tomcat_without_root_privileges.3F" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://wiki.apache.org/tomcat/HowTo#How_to_run_Tomcat_without_root_privileges.3F</a>

hope that helps.

Hi there,

This installation procedure is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Activiti 5.0 RC1 using the terminal.
Things to do:
- make sure everything keeps working after a reboot (partially fixed)
- make screen shots (anyone got a nice desktop "theme"?)
- write a script

Regards,

Winko

Install JDK, JRE, Ant and Eclipse at once as you can combine the separate installations, open a terminal window:
# sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner"
# sudo apt-get update
# sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts ant eclipse
# export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.22

Download Activiti
# mkdir Activiti
# cd Activiti
# wget http://activiti.org/downloads/activiti-5.0.rc1.zip
# unzip activiti-5.0.rc1.zip

Install Demo
# cd setup
# ant demo.setup

Open your browser and go to the following URL:
http://localhost:8080/activiti-explorer/
You can login using users:
kermit (pw: kermit)
fozzie (pw: fozzie)
gonzo (pw: gonzo)

Or check out the cool Signavio "Activiti Modeler" at the following URL:
http://localhost:8080/activiti-modeler/

Other useful links:
http://localhost:8080/activiti-probe/
http://localhost:8080/activiti-cycle/

Allright I've found a solution for rebooting 🙂
After rebooting / powering off your machine, open a terminal window to start the database and web server:
# cd Activiti/setup/
# ant h2.start
# cd ../..
# cd Activiti/apps/apache-tomcat-6.0.29/bin
# ./startup.sh

After these commands everything should be up and running again 🙂

markushbm

What about a server installation?

activist

that's more like it man 🙂
thanks Winko !!!

winko

Thanks and you´re welcome !!!
