Import Alfesco Data from one system to another?

I posted some questions on the configuration forum about my broken Ubuntu Alresco server. It is still broken.

In light of the fact that it will probably never work again, is there a way I can import the content of the alfresco data directory on to another plain jane alfresco system?

I just installed a copy on a Windows 2003 system and it seems to be working fine. If there was only a way that I could pull up the data from the other system (which is still there) in a usable and indexed format so that I can dig up some critical files that would be awesome.

Any suggestions?

I've never moved data across different OS's so I have no idea if this will work, but have you tried dumping the database on the old machine, and then moving the database dump and the alf data directory from the old machine to the new machine, loading the database dump into the new database, and starting up the server? That's basically what you'd do if you were moving between machines. But, like I said, I'm not sure how/if this works across different operating systems.

We have had similar discussions on this forum. It's fine except for some of the default database settings which can have different default settings depending on OS.

Is there a way to dump the database when alfresco isn't even running?

Yes, but it is database dependent. For example, I use MySQL locally, so to dump the database I use the mysqldump utility. To do the dump, I do:

mysqldump -ualfresco -palfresco alfresco > alfresco-dump.sql

Then I typically tar that up with my data directory and scp it to the target host. Once it gets there, I untar into my new data directory, and then load the dumped MySQL file, like this:

mysql -ualfresco -palfresco alfresco<alfresco-dump.sql

Now, assuming all of my config files and customizations are in place, I fire up Tomcat and voila.

If you are using something other than MySQL you'll have to check on that database server's doc for dump and load commands.
