Alfresco 3.4.e Version 3419 w/ POSTGRESQL

Just installed 3.4.e Ubuntu 10.4 w/ POSTGRESQL …
installation defaulted to POSTGRESQL … it appears that there is no
way to choose between POSTGRESQL and MYSQL … and since all my
present databases are MYSQL … I'd like to have 3.4.e use the same
so as to simplify the migration(s) … Is there an (easy) way to choose
MYSQL … instead? Or change to MYSQL after the install??? 3.4.e seems
stable and OK … I have 30 or so tests that I have defined … very simple,
basic stuff … this is the only (3.4.e) version that passes all my tests. I
am trying to get a version to run without all the brokenness … and this
(3.4.e) runs well, but the POSTGRESQL thing makes 3.4.e another
non-usable version. So, I either need to be able to use MYSQL or a way
to convert a "not so small" database to POSTGRESQL. So I can "easily"
migrate old databases to 3.4.e from the "broken" 3.4.d …???

I tried to move the "war" files from 3.4.e to a test 3.4.d install …
couldn't get it to run … same with "war" files from 3.5.a … no-go.

At present I am using 3.4.d with a couple of patches …

a. Wiki broken when using IE7 / IE8. Used instructions at

b. Themes broken …

I just copied all 9 of these files into proper directory … Tomcat/webapps/share/WEB-INF/lib folder

and restarted alfresco.

Further tests are in order, but the basic stuff works …

Will there ever be an installer for the 3.5.a version … ???

catalina.out was puking errors of all kinds … can't find database … etc.
I wondered if … somewhere inside the 3.5.a / 3.4.e war file some mapping
wasn't right … spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out what was wrong …
not sure that was a valid way of "installing" a new version … 3.4.e is wonderful …
just the wrong database … what was the reason for changing everything to
POSTGRESQL??? I guess that I am still a newbie …???? trying to grasp all that
I need to make this thing work … thought I was getting somewhere …
sooooo close!

a. Installed new "test" 3.4.d system with alfresco installer onto Ubuntu 10.4

b. Shut down the working 3.4.d system …alfresco.sh stop

c. renamed share.war & alfresco.war … also removed directories share & war

d. copied new war files over to system with WINSCP …

e. ./alfresco.sh start …

Catalina.out reflected some kind of database "patching" going on …
seemed "normal" … but wqms can't find database, etc by the hundreds.
I never could figure it out.

Your suggestions for the two "patches" for 3.4.d worked … for

b. themes …

I am now up on 3.4.d with the two "patches" … everything seems to be working.
It would be nice to get to 3.4.e … with MYSQL … so that my old databases could
be migrated …

When Alfresco works … it is totally awesome … accessible from anywhere, etc.
I'm using it to keep up with all my IT documentation … search inside documents,
etc. WOW!

Since you say that "that should work" … I'll try it again … what am I missing?

I was afraid I was missing something … went back to 3.4.d …

What about MYSQL for 3.4.e? If I can get it to run!

When you say you "renamed them" presumably that means "out of the webapps folder altogether"..?

So the order should be:
1 - shutdown alfresco (and *make sure* it's shutdown by checking the java processes have gone)
2 - remove from webapps folder: alfresco.war, share.war, alfresco folder, share folder
3 - (shouldn't be required, but can sometimes cause issues) remove Tomcat work and temp files
4 - copy new wars to webapps folder
5 - restart alfresco

As always, there's very little we can do to help diagnose problems if you don't post the *exact* log file entries.

I will retry the install … using your outline … to load the new war files …

If that doesn't work for 3.5.a … you say it should … I may wait for release of 3.5.a.
That should give me an installer to work with … Alfresco engineers finally got an installer
that works (fairly reliably).

Is there a fix … a way to install 3.4.e with MYSQL ???

Does 3.5.a default to POSTGRESQL … I know that 3.4.e does …

What was the reason for the change to POSTGRESQL?

I was just beginning to get comfortable with MYSQL … and they changed it on me …

If I get the war files to load … that doesn't affect which database (POSTGRESQL or MYSQL)
I'm using, right?

The "patched" 3.4.d (per your instructions) is still running … I've been unable to get 3.5.a to work … at all … and 3.4.e runs great ??? but has the wrong database …

There are so many questions … and we (the noobs) do not know all that you "insiders" do … and the kind of information we need (want) is simply not available … and as soon as I learn it … it changes …

Again, I do sincerely appreciate all you have done to help me …

Can you give me an answer regarding the 3.4.e / MYSQL / POSTGRESQL problem?
Did I miss something during the install? I could see no way to select MYSQL instead
of POSTGRESQL … and the two databases don't look at all alike … as far as I can tell …
so a migration would be a real pain … or should I skip 3.4.e? Will 3.5.a use POSTGRESQL?
I'm trying to get a feel for which direction I should go! I feel like I'm in this over my head!

You don't need to reinstall if you're upgrading an existing server. Just replace the war files. Like I said above. It'll pick up the same database settings as before.
