adding content to repo from host machine?

I have Alfresco community 4.0d installed on a Mac Lion server with external RAID enclosure.  I have a folder on that enclosure with data I would like to include in the repository for the user to access.  Is this possible?  can alfresco see data on the host machine outside of the alfresco install and add it into the available content?

You must import the data into the repository. Alfresco will place metadata about those files in a relational database. The files themselves will live on the file system in a proprietary folder structure that is not meant to be public or accessed directly (the "content store"). The content store could reside on whatever kind of storage you want.
