Install seems okay but MySQL database is empty

I am running an install on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit server.  All seems to go well, but when it comes time to log in I can't.  I connected to the MySQL server and see the alfresco database but there are no tables in it!

I tried pre-installing my own MySQL server and installing into that, and the install seemed to work (Except for an error where it still was trying to start its own instance of MySQL) but no database was created.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

When the alfresco installer runs it should create an empty schema and account which typically has the name "alfresco".

Later when alfresco starts up it will bootstrap the tables and configuration data.

It sounds like your instance of Alfresco has never started up.     The first place to look is your Alfresco.log file to see if there are any errors reported.     You probably have some sort of database connection error.   Or can't run tomcat.
