Unable to rebuild SOLR Index

Running Community 4.0.d
I noticed a problem where new content would not appear in the search results. I found documentation that said to remove the index directory. I stopped the server, removed the folder, restarted. A new index folder was created. But it appears that none of the repository documents are being indexed. Is there some other trick to kick into gear?

I have confirmed that index is working for new content only. How do I force the indexing of all of the existing content?

My current best-practice-steps-to-full-reindex-with-solr are:

# stop repository
# remove index data of archive core at alf_data/solr/archive/SpacesStore
# remove index data of workspace core at alf_data/solr/workspace/SpacesStore
# remove cached model info of archive core at alf_data/solr/archive-SpacesStore/alfrescoModels/*
# remove cached model info of workspace core at alf_data/solr/workspace-SpacesStore/alfrescoModels/*
# restart repository
# wait some time…

Maybe you have missed the models?

…improvements are welcome! I don't know why the model info is stored besides the configuration files and not besides the index data, which would be a much better place for it (separating data from configuration pattern).

I followed your procedure. And as before, SOLR will index new content only. The old content is not being indexed. I am wondering if I have some corruption in the Alfresco store that prevents SOLR from working properly.

So you have to check:

* is there any error message in the logs - check catalina.out as well because solr errors do not go into alfresco.log
* enable solr logging to help identify the issues
* see if solr thinks it is up-to-date regarding its tracking status: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Alfresco_And_SOLR#FAQ
* are your "old" documents really indexed if you add them a second time now? Maybe there is a text-extraction issue.
* is it now just a permission issue?

Really - without an error message or detailed "steps to reproduce" it is rather difficult to give help.

I cleared the index folders within ARCHIVE Spacestore and Workspace Spacestore.
I restarted and am getting a series of these errors:

The http status code 404 means NOT_FOUND. So there is no solr server running.
May be the catalina.out log file will tell you more - solr does not log to alfresco.log.

I cleared the index folders within ARCHIVE Spacestore and Workspace Spacestore.

What exactly did you remove? How does your alf_data/solr folder looks like now?

Did anybody ever figure this out? I am having the same problem. I delete everything as instructed, and the logs say that the index is being rebuilt, but it takes just a few seconds and then when I look at the index nothing is in there, it's blank.

Hi I installed version 4.0.d. My indexes got out of whack. While there were over 4 thousand documents in the repository a search of it returned only 3000. I figured the issues was the indexes and I tried to rebuild them by following the steps above. Afterwards it was worse, search returned 0 documents and only new documents were showing up. Now some documents get indexed and others do not. I am not sure what is going on with the index.

My system is a clustered Alfresco system that has two Alfresco servers sharing a content store but each alfresco server has it's own solr directory.

In alfresco.log all it's fine, no error message.

I installed my 4.0d server on a debian 6. After installation, Solr didn't work but i decide to not resolve problem of communication in a first time. I transfert my docs via FTP on my alfresco server, and only after i follow solr configuration wiki page for resolve its problem.

Now Solr works better. I have no more message in my Share interface, and in my alfresco.log. But, i have equally no results when i try to execute a solr request and in catalina.out i've got this problem of synchronisation.

I tested to delete lucene indexes and to restart with parameters index.recovery.mode=FULL without results.

It seems that i am not alone with a problem of solr indexing in alfresco 4.0d. Someone have a suggestion ?

delete tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost/solr.xml
delete directory tomcat/webapps/solr
restart

So far, no more error msgs, CPU usage seems reasonable, and performance on file upload/downloads is much much better. We got spooked by this posting and bug report, and we'll probably wait for more improved community releases:

After many problems with SOLR I have returned to the old search machine Lucene. Now I can search again and I get the right search results.

I do however get diferent search results when using Firefox!? When I use Interne Explorer and Chrome I get the same search results. This problem where also there when using SOLR.

There is an issue with multi-threaded tracking.

So go to your core configs and set:
alfresco.enableMultiThreadedTracking=false

Then delete the index folders for each core and restart Alfresco.

We were facing the same problems as well. Our environment: Alfresco 4.2, Redhat EL 6.3, custom installation with our own Tomcat 7.

In fact, we faced many problems that did not happen with Tomcat 6, and many of them turned out to be permissions problems. Not sure if Tomcat 7 is stricter than 6 in obscure ways. At any rate, one way to test would be to run Tomcat as root, then see if Solr is still unavailable - for us, it came up immediately (i.e. it finally picked up the solr.xml file under tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost … prior to that, when running as "tomcat", it was ignored).

If that works (as it did for us), then make sure that everything under the tomcat and solr directories are owned by the tomcat user … even directories that appear to be read-only (e.g. the Catalina/localhost directories… the keystore directory … and so on). Then re-start tomcat but this time with the tomcat user. Worked for us!

I was looking around for metrics on how long a SOLR index rebuild should take. We have ~ 430,000 docs in our repository. It took about 12 hours to rebuild after a version upgrade (4.1.7 -> 4.1.8) What have others experienced? Is there a guide for us to estimate future rebuilds?

Does the SOLR rebuilds improve in 4.2 or should we expect a similar time when we do that upgrade in a few months?

Does the index rebuild take advantage of the all the available CPU cores, or is it single threaded?

Our hardware is quite robust, with 8 cores and 256GB memory, attached to SAN, on RHEL.

Hi Paul,
we droped SOLR from most our bigger systems (> 500k docs) since memory was freaking all the time (Community 4.0.x, 4.2.c).
Exactly at the time of writing we're retesting with 4.2.f and 5.0.a and may take this as a good starting point for a public discussion… 😉
Indexing time is not only dependant from number of doc. The main bottlenek is the text extraction and especially libreoffice/openoffice since it doesn't support any kind of multithreading and is not mature as a server component.
To get a better idea of the indexing to do's you should provide doc numbers grouped by document type (–> transformer):
- text based docs like txt, html, xml (scales well)
- pdf (scales well as long the pdfs are well formed and are not encrypted)
- office docs (word scales well since tika is choosen in most cases, other types don't scale because of libreoffice/OO limitations). We recommend real server solutions like FileConverterPro (http://www.pdfa.org/commercial/fileconverter-3/) which scales excellent and increases redering quality
- non indexed types like images, not supported types like indesign etc. (not relevant for indexing)

We'd love to get a fund for implementing a cache service between transformer and SOLR/lucene. blueprint is here. This would speed up an indexing dramatically.
