How can I list all subcategories of a specific category through a webscript?
I tried this but it lists far too many nodes, and I am confused why?

nodes = search.luceneSearch("PATH:\"/cm:generalclassifiable//cm:" + categoryName + "//*\"");

Any pointers or help would be highly appreciated!

I'm not sure you can do this with search - I have implemented this in the past using the Java API.

As your path ends //* it finds anything beneath the PATH.
Try /* at the end.

Or you could get the direct subcategories using the categories service :

StoreRef STORE= new StoreRef(Constants.WORKSPACE_STORE, "SpacesStore");
Collection<ChildAssociationRef> subCategories = serviceRegistry.getCategoryService().getCategories(STORE, ContentModel.ASPECT_GEN_CLASSIFIABLE, Depth.IMMEDIATE);

Just change ASPECT_GEN_CLASSIFIABLE by the parent category's QName.
