I noticed that Share has an iCal feature. Does this allow you to import outlook events into Share or can you only download the event list from Share?

I havn't had any luck with this. Whilst there is an ical 'feed', outlook (2007, anyway..) won't accept it. It requires the url to end in *.ics, where as the alfresco feed url doesn't do this.

Alfresco also seems to publish ics files to a folder within the site - so you can access this via CIFS if you so wish. However, it creates one ICS for each appointment - again, outlook won't cope with this.

A shame. Share has the makings of an excellent tool. However, for now, it lacks the completeness of a mature application, IMO.

Actually the iCal Feed is to allow you to 'subscribe' to your Share site calendar from an outside application. I've successfully subscribed from multiple applications (iCal, Sunbird, phpCalendar).

I believe the problem is that Outlook does not support HTTP authentication. When you import the iCal feed with an other calendar client (e.g. Lightning), it prompts for your user name and password. Outlook doesn't do this.

Faced with the same issue of no prompting in Zimbra Web Client, I edited the given iCal URL from

http://your.alfresco.server:8080/share/proxy/alfresco-feed/calendar/eventList?site=testsite&format=calendar

to prefix the required login info:

http://UserNameassword@your.alfresco.server:8080/share/proxy/alfresco-feed/calendar/eventList?site=testsite&format=calendar

Works in Zimbra. I have no idea if that will help you around the limitation in Outlook but it may be worth a shot?

Good point, I didn't know you could supply user names and passwords in HTTP URLs.

However, it still doesn't work in Outlook 😞 Most likely because of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834489

I'm trying the current version Alfresco (v3.3G CE)

I have got Outlook 2003 to download the Share Calendar by using the free addin utility Remotecalendar.

Once installed in outlook click on subscribe a remote calendar and paste the ical feed url into the addin and then enter the login details. It seems to work okay…

It doesn't work for me with Outlook 2010. Did microsoft change the address away from webcal?
I get an error, "the file "eventList" is not a valid Internet Calendar file."

I haven't used Outlook 2010 at all, but I'm willing to bet they didn't change much in the name of calendar support. The error message you got is the same one I saw many, many times while trying to figure this out.

To be honest, I don't expect it to work, but it's worth a shot! Outlook 2007 complains when you follow this same process because the iCal links in Alfresco don't end in .ics.

Wikipedia says that Webcal uses WebDAV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webcal). Do you know if you have WebDAV enabled? If not, try enabling it and retrying the process I described above.

That totally worked! Not sure what I was missing before. To be honest I think it was a problem with my passthru authentication because once I verified that I was logged on through my domain controller (I hadn't been before), the WebDav sign-in dialogue popped up and Outlook grabbed the calendar.
Now if only I could make changes in outlook and have them be reflected back to the Share site, I would be home free. Instead I get a "this calendar is read only" warning.

I don't know if it's an "issue" per se… I seem to remember the current format working with other iCal-enabled calendars. You might give it a shot with Mozilla Sunbird or something like that.

In a future version of Alfresco, it would be really neat to see the iCal button turn into a drop-down menu or dialog that give you the option to choose between iCal or WebCAL.

In the meantime could someone point me to the correct place in the code to change this manually to a WebCal. 100% of my users are on OutLook, so I would like to make the link permanent to that format.

I wish I could help you out, but my server isn't available right now. Are you working in a Linux environment? You could grep -r your tomcat directory for "eventList" and pipe it into less to search for where that URL is generated…

I'm on a Win2008 server. I've searched for both ical and eventlist in Alfresco directory.
From this I found feed.get.desc.xml which contains

Hi mthomas,

That doesn't look right to me. I'm not even sure where to point you, either… This could be a hefty change since it requires you to change the protocol of the link, not just the address. You might be better off creating a utility that writes the URL for you. Since the calendar URLs are super predictable, you could probably just make a simple little dashlet for that.

The problem with the iCal uri is that the mime type text/calendar is not set by the the share application

http://localhost:8080/share/proxy/alfresco-feed/calendar/eventList?site=testsite&format=calendar

if I change the format parameter to json or anything else it always remains text/plain.

If is use the alfresco explorer link however it does work:
http://localhost:8080/alfresco/service/calendar/eventList?site=testsite&format=calendar
This will result in a correct iCal URI.

My guess is that share calls for the alfresco uri, but looses the mimetype in the process.

It worked for me in Outlook 2010 and Alfresco Community 3.4d. I first clicked on the iCal Feed button, which opened a new browser window and I copied the URL. I then went to the Oulook Calendar, clicked on Open Calendar, and selected "From internet." I pasted the URL and now can see my Alfresco calendar in Outlook. Hope this helps.
