Alfresco WCM emphasizes on Repository or Database ?

Can anyone exactly tell me how the alfresco WCM wizard flow occurs ?
I mean as per my understanding I guess that

the entry of our created web project (in Company Home>Web Projects) is made in the database.
Every entry - file name/folder/space/images/css/…everything….

And our uploaded WAR file is stored in repository at alf_data folder (in binary format).
Entry of this WAR file is referred from database tables.
Am I right ?

In summary that's correct, but it's better to think of the alf_data directory and alfresco database as implementation details that aren't normally relevant for developers / implementors. They just happen to be the way the current versions of Alfresco persist content.
