XAMPP, Tomcat 6 add-on, Alfresco 3

May I request someone who has been successful with getting on Windows Vista XAMPP, Tomcat 6 XAMPP add-on, and the Alfresco and Share v3 war deployments to post the steps taken to configure? I'm having a lovely time, and fear I am now shot-gunning my repository.properties to a point where it may be hindering my progress.

So, here's what I did after combing through the forums (thanks to MikeH for contributing very helpful content). I'm on Windows Vista, and needed a fresh development environment. I also needed more than the Alfresco bundled tech stacks.

1) Download the following from Apache Friends (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html )
1a) XAMPP Windows 1.7.0 [Basic package] - Installer
1b) Patch2 for 1.7.0 - Installer
1c) Tomcat 6.0.18 XAMPP 1.7.x - Installer for mod_jk.

2) Download the alfresco-labs-war-3Stable.zip, and unzip it into a temp folder, I'll call it <TEMP>.

3) Execute / install each in #1 to a folder, default suggested by XAMPP is c:\xampp, I'll call it <XAMPP_HOME>. Should be this way because folder permissions under "C:\Program Files (x86)" get wacky to manage. I installed Apache, MySQL, and FileZilla as a service.

4) Assure folder permissions are set appropriately for Tomcat. Do not start Tomcat yet.

5) In <TOMCAT_ROOT>\bin\catalina.bat, look for "set JAVA_OPTS=" and append these params: -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m

6) Install should have already started Apache and MySQL as a service, but check. If MySQL is started, go to <TEMP>\extras\databases\mysql and run db_setup.bat.

7) Copy the <TEMP>\ImageMagick folder to <TOMCAT_HOME>\ImageMagick.

😎 Copy each folder found in <TEMP>\extensions folder to <TOMCAT_HOME>\lib folder.

9) Copy the <TEMP>\endorsed folder to the folder found in <XAMPP_HOME>\tomcat_start.bat under the JAVA_HOME= path.

10) Copy the <TEMP>\alfresco.war and <TEMP>\share.war to the <TOMCAT_HOM>\webapps folder.

11) Start Tomcat.

12) Open browser and go to http://localhost:8080/alfresco

I did have a few Tomcat errors still to troubleshoot and tune, but I was happy to see it (and Share) finally running. Feel free to add or correct me.

This looks like the exact set of instructions that i need for my schoolproject. I'm trying to install Alfresco so later on I can integrate it with Drupal. Not that experienced though, whole new field of work for me. On top of that unfortunately there is nobody around here who has any experience with it. So I've got a couple of questions.

I have xampp 1.7.0 with the tomcat 6 addon running on XP, tomcat is not installed as a service neither is filezilla. My alfresco directory is c:\alfresco but what I get from your guide is that it should be installed under my xampp dir? Correct?

Already looked at the <TOMCAT_ROOT>\bin\catalina.bat to try and grasp what should be done in order to make this work. Found the "set JAVA_OPTS=", what I don't know is where/how to add these parameters.

Hi Femke,

By copying the .war files into a non-running Tomcat, at <TOMCAT_HOME>\webapps, the deployment process will create the folders needed, and <TOMCAT_HOME>\webapps\alfresco will be generated. Also, be sure to delete the <TOMCAT_HOM>\alfresco.war and share.war files after Tomcat has deployed your apps.

Your placement of JAVA_OPTS parameters into the existing string seems fine to me.

I'm also still finishing up configuring the connecting of my previously existing install of Open Office 3 for transformations, which is missing in these instructions, and causes various startup errors in Tomcat.
