I have followed the steps that are given in the link but somehow its not working for me it is giving me Exception like

Hi,

Here is the simple steps to follow,

For debugging the eclipse envt…
1)   Open Catalina.bat [C:\Alfresco\tomcat\bin], find “DEBUG_OPTS=” and add following line..
   set DEBUG_OPTS= -Xdebug -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=8888

2)   Come to Eclipse ->
      a)Open debug perspective[Windows->open perspective ->Other->Debug]
      b)Run-> Open Debug Dialog -> Remote Java Application -> New configuration ->
      c)Select the project -> Enter the port number as debug port in the Catalina.bat (8888)
3)   Start Alfresco server.
4)   Put the breakpoint in the file
5)   Start debug.
6)     Use the Alfresco to get to the debug mode..

is there any one tried debugging Share . I tried JPDA and was able to hit my checkpoint ( LoginBean ,getUsername()) . But when I had a checkpoint at service() method of DispatcherServlet in the SHARE , its not catching it , I tried FrameworkHelper as well . Please let me know if someone tried and succesful debugging SHARE . Please direct me .

I take my question back , I am not sure why my checkpoint at service method was not hit but , I was able to hit the checkpoint at dispatch method on dispatcherservlet .

Hi,

I am trying to debug in eclipse but I cant.
I have my code base setup in eclipse and I can build and run alfresco from eclipse.

I tried the above step set the DEBUG as
In catalina.sh i did

(2) In eclipse I set the debug configuration i set the port 8888. but when I debug I am getting com.sun.jdi.connect.spi.ClosedConnectionException error message.
Also i tried with 8080 port where tomcat is running. Still it is nt working for me.

Pls share ur ideas if any.

The closed connection exception generally means that alfresco has shut down while you were debugging.

Make sure alfresco is started before you start debugging and remains running.

If you are, for example debugging a unit test that starts and stops alfresco then debug it locally not remotely.

Thanks for your reply. I have all the code base,eclipse and alfresco in a VM. I am accssing all the application thro Xming.
I checked tomcat and alfresco both running. As per my above step I set the debug statement in catalina.sh. Now when i start alfresco thro putty (./startup.sh) alfresco is not starting.

(1)Is my set DEBUG_OPTS= -Xdebug -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=8888 is in proper place??
(2) If tomcat is running at 8080 then in the above statement address=8888 or address=8080????

If you are trying to remotely debug your local Tomcat installation than you might consider using Sysdeo tomcat plugin. It will allow you to debug without messing with remote debugging and it has a nice feature to reload classes without server restart.

Ah, I just noticed that you have remote machine with Tomcat installation. Sysdeo plugin can not be of any help in that case, you will have to set up remote debugging.

I checked-out downloaded all the projects from SVN and I'm able to build Alfresco, but when trying to launch it (not in Eclipse) Tomcat seems to freeze. There's the hint for Linux installations that one should give more memory to Tomcat when this happens. But how can I do that on Windows with Tomcat 6 please? (There's no catalina.bat or catalina.sh on Tomcat 6.)

Also before I can build my/modified Alfresco I have to make the debugging work, I fail at that too.

I have some experience with Tomcat and debugging apps for it (in Eclipse using Sysdeo launcher) but until now I was always debugging my own app consisting of single project.
What is the proper way of making the Tomcat in Eclipse 'load' all the projects/parts of Alfresco?

Also I'd like to make sure I do understand what is the difference between "debugging in Eclipse" and "remote debugging in Eclipse".
Does the later mean that Tomcat is not run in Eclipse? What are the benefits or limitations of such debugging please? (Why would one prefer it over being able to see any changes in code almost instantly reflected in the running app?)

I have read that one (and couple of others)… The thing is that Ant 'yells' at me that some script is intended for Tomcat 6 only. Also I'd rather use current version.
Also I'm not sure whether ImageMagick is required on Windows, judging by this message from mrogers.

I am not sure which Tomcat bundle you are using.
I saw my tomcat's bin folder containing catalina.sh. Have you taken any tomcat.exe file and installed? Pls check it is installed properly and you can able to see tomcat's home page.

Also I have worked only on Linux,so I dont have much idea on Windows. Also, I saw the below link(http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Alfresco_SVN_Development_Environment#Extracting_and_building) explictly stating Imagemagick for Unix.

If you have your dev env,eclipse and the server in one machine, better you do the server configuration instead of Remote debugging.
There is no difference but the different way of debugging

I have installed Tomcat from the installer and also I have downloaded the zip-archive for virtual Tomcat. (Which purpose I don't have the slightest clue about.)
Now I'm looking into the zip-archive, and it actually contains catalina.sh.

Yes, I would actually prefer running/debugging in Eclipse rather than the remote debugging.

One of the things I don't understand is where does Eclipse get the information about what application should it create within its Tomcat-instance… :?

How do you modify the catalina.sh ? I can't get the log : "Listening for transport…" when I restart the server.

I have installed the Alfresco 34d on RHEL

Restart "service alfresco restart"
My eclipse is working (connection with another Alfresco installation)
No message in the log during the startup (and eclipse can't connect it)

I did not modify catalina.sh at all.

I've changed one line in startup.sh from

1. Navigate the folder where alfresco is been installed in the Command prompt.
Cd

\Installs\alfrescoServer\tomcat\bin
2.   Now run the below command
.\tomcat7w.exe //ES//alfrescoTomcat
4.   In this open the tab Java and add the below values in the Java options
-Xdebug
-Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,address=8000,server=y,suspend=n
5.   Click Apply and OK. By doing this we have made service aware of debugging.
6.   Restart the alfresco server.
7.   In Eclipse Connect to the remote application by configuring the port 8000
8.   Click on Debug and Happy debugging 
