I have just installed 3Stable with openoffice3. I have noticed, even with no activity that the soffice.bin process continues to use 50-60% of the CPU resources.

This process stops when I stop Alfresco.
Is this something normal?
This process doesn't seem to be using up more memory.

I have the same issue with soffice.bin.
It seems like when adding content, soffice.bin hangs up randomly.
This happened to me about a week or two ago, i restarted alfresco and all was well. But now it's back.

I am running alfresco share 3.2. i have updated OO to version 3.2.

Has anyone pinpointed what triggers this?

Also seeing this behavior on community 3.3g. Upload a document to Alfresco, soffice.bin uses 100% CPU and alfresco waits, kill soffice.bin and it continues to the metadata screen immediately.

I have this problem too.

With alfresco 3.3 soffice from lenny backports worked fine, but now with both (from backports and from afresco tar.gz) in alfresco 3.4.a are eating 50-60 % cpu and openoffice won't shutdown

I have to kill soffice (or wait many ? minutes) (cpu is slowly go down since alfresco stop was launched)

Any tip about ?

I have the same problem, soffice.bin started using 50% CPU just after installation.
I don't have any documents and the configuration is the default one.

This problem occured with many version of Ubuntu and Debian : Debian 5 64bits, Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits, Ubuntu 10.04 32 bits, with the Alfresco 3.4b linux installer (alfresco-community-3.4.a-installer-linux-x32.bin or alfresco-community-3.4.a-installer-linux-x64.bin).

When I upload a document, I see an other soffice.bon process running at 100% cpu for just a few seconds which is normal.

I experienced the same bug.

For what I know, using jodconverter instead of "ooo" is an Enterprise only feature. Still, both use Open Office, jodconverter can however run multiple threads, and start soffice.bin on demand (my interpreation of jodconverter features).

Works for me as well with 3.4.a on CentOS 5.5
Problem is, I administer one Alfresco installation on Windows Server 2008r2 as well. OOo tends to crash quite often, using up 50% PCU power (100% of 1 of 2 cores), so I'd like to use jodconverter as well.
Problem is: I can't get it to work!

First I thought it was because of the path included a space: C:/Program Files (x86)/OpenOffice.org 3/program/soffice.exe
But I've copied everything, to a different location without space (C:/OOo3/program/soffice.exe), but still no luck.

When I use the original option (ooo.enabled=true), both paths work as expected.

Anyone a suggestion?

You cannot get jodconverter to work on community edition. I think it is a mistake by Alfresco to put those configuration options in the sample config file for community edition. I've searched for any code using those properties, and cannot find any. http://fisheye.alfresco.com/qsearch?q=jodconverter

What if you delete the folder for Open Office profile, as given by setting
ooo.user=${dir.root}/oouser
It will be re-created on next startup. I'm thinking it may be corrupted in some way, causing soffice.bin to behave badly.

Jodconverter not part of CE? How come it works on Linux, with the configuration shown by Juan?
Or am I wrong here and is it actually the standard conversion-mechanism at work here, even though alfresco-global.properties says: ooo.enabled=false?

I tried deleting the oouser folder (rm -r *) and since I've restarted Alfresco both soffice and java CPU utalisation has dropped to 0 when no users on the system as expected. However now the java utalisation has gone back up to 100% after a few minutes.

For whatever reason my Java utalisation is 100% with soffice at the same until I kill it. I'm on Alfresco 3.4d on Ubuntu and this caused the whole server to stop running several times. Need a fix fast!

Bump! We have this same problem on Win2008 R2 server using Alfresco CE 4.0 b. I literally have to restart the Alfresco app (server/db/etc) 3 - 4 times a day to keep things running. Anyone have any ideas here?

I am having this same problem on alfresco v4.2.c. if i kill soffice the cpu utilisation goes back to normal but i get the following error

Replying to an old post in case others find this useful.

Generally, when soffice.bin pegs the CPU at 9-100% for minutes it's because it's trying to convert a document that it doesn't understand. I have some sample documents (.docx, unfortunately confidential so I can't post them here) which (Open/Libre)Office just can't deal with. Even opening the same .docx in libreoffice will peg the CPU and libreoffice never opens the document for editing since it's stuck in an infinite loop.

In linux, you can do "sudo lsof -p [soffice.bin_pid] | grep '/tmp/' | grep '\.tmp'" and you'll be able to find the temporary file that's being converted.

My solution at this point is to kill the soffice.bin job and start it again manually (via a shell script that replicates exactly the command line that alfresco starts soffice.bin with).

That's a temporary fix. At some point that document will be previewed again and will peg the CPU again.

Would be good to have an automatic monitor (whether in alfresco or elsewhere) that polls soffice.bin CPU usage and if it's pegged for a given interval, would check if it's stuck on the same document for a few polling cycles. If it is, kill it and auto-start a new soffice.bin instance. I'm interested in doing something like that but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hi,
Killing everytime soffice process is somewhat annoying task.
I observed something that using older version of openOffice configuring with linux works well instead 3.x versions.
Because killing soffice bin job inbetween may crashing something inbetween or hang alfresco sometimes.

If we have permanant fix for this please suggest.

I've noticed the same problem. If, however, I run <em>soffice.bin</em> from the command line, CPU usage doesn't go up. So I've concluded that maybe it doesn't like standard output being redirected. Indeed, if in <em>openoffice_ctl.sh</em> I change <blockquote>$SOFFICE >/dev/null 2>&1 &</blockquote> to <blockquote>$SOFFICE</blockquote>, CPU usage remains low.

As for automatically killing / restarting processes using high CPU, look into "Monit" (http://mmonit.com/monit/). It will do just that.

I don't have the issue with high CPU when redirecting stdout. I have the issue when trying to convert certain specific files that soffice doesn't understand. Instead of giving up, it goes into an infinite loop (well, same effect as an infinite loop anyway).
