CIFS, Windows 2003 and NetBIOS

Hi,

I'm facing again the problem of configuring CIFS on Windows with Alfresco 2.1. I'm using the standard configuration of the file-server and file-server-custom based on Win32NetBIOS.
Server is a Windows 2003 named PORTALE, firewall disabled , static IP, no DHCP and the network adapter is configured with NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.
Starting Alfresco I get this logs

Is this a question about disabling the logging, or is CIFS not working?

In the first case it is probably in the file-server.xml file.

for the latter windows can be a pain because Alfresco CIFS will collide with Windows native SMB/CIFS/Shares.

The "already in use" makes me think this is happening

Not all of those are needed but usually some combination will help the problem.

Thanks. My question is about CIFS that is not working.
I don't understand why Alfresco try to open a port already in use if I configure it to use the underlaying NetBIOS service. Maybe this is due because I use winsock api. I will try the configurations you suggest but I think could be very useful a troubleshooting wiki page to configure CIFS on windows.

I agree with you on the trouble shooting. It took me a good solid 2 days the first time.

I believe the most stable one i found was to use netbios and use the registry key. but i think the registry key made backup a pain because it didn't just kill the windows SMB server but the client as well

Hi, I changed my registry key as mentioned above (restarted machine), as well as added the <disableNativeCode/> and <disableNIO/> in my file-server-custom.xml file and still unable to map to the alfresco folder in the server (CIFS).

When i changed debug level, I could see that the share drive is getting created. Here is a snippet of my server log,

The only other thing i can thing is you need to have a different domain name for the alfresco server application because if you dont windows grabs everything

in the deployed war file, there are two files to note.

file-servers.xml and file-serves.properties

in the first one you will find a line that looks like this

<host name="${cifs.localname}A" domain="${cifs.domain}"/>

What it does is grabs the specified hostname from the .properties file and appends an "A" to the end of it. I have seen it as a -A or an _A as well i believe.

so if we pretend you named the server "Alfserver" so its full domain name was "alfserver.company.com" alfresco will only listen to "alfserverA.company.com"

what you have to do then is, manually register something to the effect of "alfserverA.company.com" in your DNS and then try to connect to that address

I believe it likes to have the full suffix on it too so in windows it would be start–>run "\\alfserverA.company.com"

If that doesn't work, i dont know what to tell you.

Ah good. I made some progress based on your reply. Earlier I used to have my system name as the host name and didnt realise we shouldnt be having a separate host name if CIFS to work (is it documented anywhere?)

Before:
I added <host name="Machine Name" domain="Windows domain name" />

after your reply:
I added <host name="AlfServer" domain="Windows domain name" />

Now , I didnt get the network not found while connecting to this drive but final issue is, I'm not able to connect using the same userId/password (NTLM) with which I could connect to my alfresco console or web dav.

am i missing anything so obvious here?

here is my .properties file with generic names put in

for cifs.localname set it to the actual server name so if the box is machineName.company.com set it to "machineName"

try a leading "." before your company.com as seen below

and i believe that is how the broadcast is supposed to be but my topology doesn't allow for it to work so i never tried (not necessary for cifs)

cifs.localname=machineName
cifs.domain=.company.com
cifs.broadcast=192.168.1.255

and here are the first few lines of my file-servers.xml file

Hiya, I do have the above mentioned details and the <authenticator type="alfresco">.

Read in Alfresco JIRA that if I leave it to "alfresco", CIFS authenticator will use passthru sessions via the NTLM auth component to validate the logon. In both scenarios, i.e. authenticatory type to be "alfresco" or "passthru" , my NTLM password isnt getting authenticated by CIFS while using same password i get authenticated by Alfresco console and webdav.

When I select the userId and password, it gets struck with this message,

the alfresco mechanism works great for me in cifs. for FTP though you have to use passthru.

what does your ntlm-authentication-context.xml look like?

I remember there being something querky about getting all the file servers to work

here is a snipit from mine. ill pretend the domain is "company.com" and i have 2 domain controllers at 10.0.10.200 and 10.0.10.201

below the domain is all caps COMPANY and there is no suffix

with this code, I am able to log in to alfresco console (http://localhost:8080/alfresco) and webdav (http://localhost:8080/alfresco/webdav) using my windows domain userid and password.

But the same userid/pwd is not working for the CIFS inspite of making the changes to the file-servers-custom.xml file

I do see the server log saying that CIFS server is started and it uses org.alfresco.filesys.auth.cifs.AlfrescoCifsAuthenticator

Here is the log,

Finally…figured out the issue..Its my bad the way i configured my file-server-custom.xmlfile.
The value of domain infile-server-custom.xmlwas set to my DNS domain name where as in my ntlm-authentication-type.xml file the domain was WindowsDomain.

Now that after changing my file-server-custom.xmlfile, I was able to authenticate with my domain userId and password. Thanks a lot for your help.
