Alfresco via Nautilus

Running 2.1 on Ubuntu 8.04.  Everything via the Web client is fine.

Using Gnome's Nautilus, I can "Connect to Server" using Webdav, navigate the spaces, see content, etc.  So far so good.

But if I edit a file, then save it, all the meta data is blown away.  I lose the previous versions, ability to edit inline, etc.  The new content of the file is saved correctly.

Am I doing something really stupid?  Or simply something that isn't fully implemented?

What kind of file are you editing?

I believe this is because the editor is copying the original file and creating a new file. This is what you are editing. When you save, it saves this new file and deletes the old file. Thus, Alfresco has no idea the new file is the old file. Hence losing version info, meta-data and ability to edit inline. Issue is not related to Alfresco, but your file editor.
