Alfresco Installation on Ubuntu

Hi Folks

I'm trying (well, failing, mostly) to install Alfresco on Ubuntu. I've spent 2 days scouring web & forums for fixes, and have now got to the point where I don't get any error messages in any of the Alfresco/Tomcat logs when I do

sudo ./alfresco.sh start‍

from /opt/alfresco. But when I try and access alfresco from my browser at "http:\\<serverIpAddress>:8080\alfresco" the browser times out.

I am using Ubuntu 8.04, and "alfresco-community-tomcat-2.9.0B.tar.gz". I have followed the installation guide in the forums for installing on Ubuntu 7 [and 8], so I am using MySQL.

After trying to access "http:\\<serverIpAddress>:8080\alfresco" I get the following errors reported in catalina.out…

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm afraid I made a typo - I WAS using port 8080 (I have now edited my original post).

The default http port is 8080, I see you used 8090. Another question what JDK/JVM version did you use? If you used 1.6x, then try 1.5x.

Java reports the following version.

So I guess I need to try version 1.5.

I think MySQL is configured to listen on the default port 3306 (not sure how to verify this). I am using eBox, so I have created a network service for this port - that should prevent the firewall from blocking it. I then emptied out the alf_data directory, dropped the database, and created a fresh alfresco database. I then rebooted the server. However, I still get a timeout on :8080\alfresco, and I get the same error messages in catalina.log, as per my original post.

Nigel - you still listening to this thread? I'm trying to install Alfresco on Ubuntu as well and starting to go through the steps.

Right now, I'm installing some of the other applications that are needed with alfresco - so I've installed hibernate, log4j, lucene, and imagemagick but trying right now to find out if the Bouncy Castle Cryptography Extension can be substituted for the Sun version since there's no package for Ubuntu hardy

So, so far I've done

sudo apt-get install libhibernate-commons-annotations-java liblucene2-java liblog4j1.2-java imagemagick‍

I'm going to try it with libgnucrypto-java and I'll keep updating this entry

Yes, I'm still here… And Alfresco still doesn't work on my system! I think the problem is that Tomcat can't connect to MySQL. I have seen several posts that suggest that the Alfresco installation will fail on systems that already have MySQL installed. Since I am installing on a LAMP server, then this may be the cause of the problem. But I can't find out why, or how to fix it.

I've actually given up - it ended up breaking everything else on my system that was running under Tomcat, so I think the idea is to either start with one of their distro's that they recommend or with a completely naked system.

It seems as though it's looking for certain files to be in certain places and I have a feeling that it takes over the Tomcat server on the box, so you can't have other applications running on it. I'll let you know if I try it on another box.

Thanks for your comments. I'm inclined to give up, too. Not just because I can't get the installation to work, but because I'm concerned that if the database ever got mangled, then it might prove impossible (or beyond me, at least) to recover the data. It looks like the boring old shared drive is here to stay!

Bit late maybe, but I have been running 2.1CE and the trunk from a few months ago on Ubuntu Hardy with no insurmountable problems.

If MikeH is right and alfresco can't connect to the db then there are a few things to check

1. is mysql up and running? I guess so if you can log in and drop the db. To be sure try $ netstat -ln | grep 3306
2. make sure you have the mysql jar in the right place - mine is at ./common/lib/mysql-connector-java-5.0.3-bin.jar
3. double check the settings in custom-repository.properties and make sure you can log into the db with the alfresco username and password.
You have to uncomment the database section and the mysql section and make sure the username and password match what is set up in the db

db.pool.max=100

Thanks for trying to help. In response to your questions, I found the following…
1. If I do

netstat -ln | grep 3306‍

I get

Is that good, or bad?
2. the mysql jar is at ./common/lib/mysql-connector-java-5.0.3-bin.jar
3. I have gazillion checked the settings in custom-repository.properties, and they match the settings in the dB.
4. I can't find a file "README-mysql.txt" on my system, so I don't know what instructions to try.

That's good. its showing that "something" is listening on port 3306.
I would check that you can telnet to this port. I'm sure theres a better way, but try $ telnet localhost 3306
If you get this after a few seconds then there is no firewall issue:

theres a README.txt too…That might have something new to try… it mentions that you have to
alter custom-hibernate-dialect.properties as well.

Just a comment on Mattew's post up the thread a bit - I don't think you need to install all these packages - the jar files are shipped with alfresco.

Does Alfresco want to take over the tomcat server?

I used to be able to go and get the Tomcat welcome page, but now that I've tried to install Alfresco, I get a binding error on port 8180 (which is the port I installed Tomcat 6 to)

Anyway, thanks for the help, but it looks like I have to pull everything back off and restart with the installation since Tomcat appears to be irrevocably broken! Aaaahhhh!

Guys,

Contrary to what the comments in the properties file say, the mysql-connetor-<version>.jar file is not included in the distribution.
On a debian or ubuntu, you must therefore do:

apt-get install mysql-java‍

Then, the problem is that no java virtual machine can find jars in /usr/share/java. What I do to solve that is create a soft link to the endorsed directory:

ln -s /usr/share/java/mysql-connector-java.jar /opt/alfresco/tomcat/common/endorsed.‍

This should get you out of the mysql connection issues.

Thanks, but that doesn't seem to do it for me. I'm trying to install Alfresco 3.0 Labs on an Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 running Tomcat 6.0.18 and Java 6 - I think I'm just too far ahead of the times.

I did this twice today, and followed your instructions. BTW, it's libmysql-java for the apt-get install command - so it read like this -

sudo apt-get install libmysql-java‍

But both times, it hosed my Tomcat install so bad, that just deleting the .war file and removing the alfresco subdirectory from the Tomcat directory wouldn't fix it. The easiest way was to just delete the entire Tomcat directory and install from new.

Oh dear - still no luck?

Scraping the barrel here but try saving the following code as /opt/alfresco/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/test.jsp while tomcat is running

Then call http://localhost:8080/alfresco/test.jsp in a browser and see what you get. If you get an exception the stack trace should give us a clue…

but on the other hand if you can connect like this (and see "Hello Mike!") then I'm totally at a loss!

Note the code does not make any assumptions about any alfresco tables or data being there - I assume that alfresco never got as far as installing the schema…?

Thanks for your persistence. I created the Java file, as you suggested. But when I try and open http://localhost:8080/alfresco/test.jsp, I just get the "The server at … is taking too long to respond." message, as usual.

I have seen other posts that suggest that when TomCat is running, you get a banner page at http://localhost:8080. But I just get the "The server at … is taking too long to respond." message. I think this implies that TomCat isn't running properly. Maybe I need too fix that first. But I don't know how to.

I am concluding that I don't have sufficient Linux skills to run Alfresco.

It's worrying when you say "Alfresco takes over Tomcat and breaks it" (to paraphrase) as we're certainly not doing that intentionally. It sounds like a fundamental permissions issue though.

I used the 2.9b tomcat bundle - not sure exactly what tomcat minor version that is, but definitely 5.5.x I also have JDK 1.5.0_12, all on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04…

Apparently, Tomcat changes the directory structure between 5.5 and 6 and I have a feeling it's looking for something and not finding it correctly.

It's difficult for me to continue installing it. I've tried 2.1, 2.9b and 3 and it's got to be an issue with either Tomcat 6 or Java 6.

MikeH - I say it's trying to take over the Tomcat server because every time I install the alfresco.war file, I get all these errors concerning binding to the port that I've installed Tomcat to. The first installation, I had Tomcat installed to port 8180, and I was getting the binding errors. The easiest way for me to fix the issue was to delete Tomcat off my system, then reinstall Tomcat. The second installation, I set the Tomcat port to 8080, and now I'm getting binding errors to port 8080. I'll try to reinstall Alfresco and make sure that the permissions are set.

I'm currently running OpenbravoERP on the system with no problems!

Good idea to check the logs… I now get a different error, so we must be making progress! I get lots of errors about Java running out of heap, like this

If you used the settings in the previous post, the maximum heap size (-Xmx) is set lower than the initial heap size (-Xms) which would cause a problem. Reverse them.

I think there is only 512MB RAM in my server. Maybe that isn't enough?

Does it still not work? That start-up sequence looks ok for testing purposes.
