I got rid of the problem after logging in to the old alfresco-client and creating a new user. After this I could log on to Share using any user.
Had the same problem, but it was solved after I downloaded alfresco.war file (packaged for Linux) and replaced the one shipped with installer.
It seems that the problem is with the windows binary download.
Got it working, finally. It seems that the problem is with the windows binary download.I downloaded the zip version(http://downloads.sourceforge.net/alfresco/alfresco-labs-tomcat-3a.1032.zip?modtime=1217543689&big_mirror=0) and it worked just fine.

I like to add on more reason the login to share could fail. I just installed 3.0final and got the same error "The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognized." when accessing http://localhost:8080/share.It turned out, my local windows firewall blocked tomcat from accessing itself (share accessing the alfresco webapp at localhost). So make sure the tomcat process can open http connections to localhost.Hope it helps someone.Regards,Florian
