Hi!

I'm running Alfresco 2.1 on a Debian machine. More precisely: I did install it a few weeks ago, it ran, does not anymore.

My setup: debian, MySQL 5.0, JDBC connector 5.1, tomcat 5.5

During startup I get this error thrice:

I tried reinstalling everything. Recreated the database, set the permissions for alfresco on alfresco etc. Root.dir exists, write permissions granted. Configuration files are setup for MySQL.

I'm really confused. For me it looks like a database problem. But really not sure what kind of (btw: no tables in alfreso-db so far (after reinstall)).

All hints welcome.

I've already installed everything again but I cannot start alfresco beacuse of this error.
There is another user with the same problem (niatzbach, 8 Oct 2007)

I too have the same problem (see stack trace below).

I am trying to get this running on mac OSX 10.4.10. Everything seems set up correctly - tables are being populated in MySQL and all goes seemingly well, but surf to

http://localhost:8080/alfresco/

and this ends up in the log (no web page is returned).

Help!??

The exception is masking the real error - it is hiding a failure to make a DB connection. Please check the connection to your DB from your Alfresco server. We fixed the issue with the real exception being hidden in 2.1E and current HEAD code. If you try with a nightly build you'll see the real exception at least.

We are experiencing the exact same problem here, our AF version is the "community Edition 2.1.0 (482) schema 64".

Running it on W2K3 Server, we have tried restarting every service, it doesn't help : once the error happens, everything related to Alfresco (and that includes MySQL) is impossible to use.

One additional clue though : We have noticed that we even if the MySQL service seems to work, actually it is not : command lines and/or web interfaces such as PhPMyAdmin, tell us that the MySQL server is "gone away" (I smiled at the tone of this error message but it's literally this : "gone away"

)

Thus what Kevinr says here above seems happening with us too : this is somehow related to a Database connectivity issue.

The thing is : we don't do anything special beside letting Alfresco run for like 1 or 2 days, with no problem at all. Suddenly, the error happens and the only way to fix it is a complete reboot of the server … which is not handy :?

Any lead on any way to investigate this further on , or, let's dream, a solution ?

Are you using MySQL 64bit? I'm asking because it sounds like your MySQL process is dying - which is not directly an Alfresco problem. We did notice instabilities in the 64bit version of MySQL during some testing a few months back - it might be worth trying a slightly diff version of MySQL anyway. Might be worth looking for the newest JDBC driver version also - but that's unlikely to be killing the mysql process.

Our MySQL version is 5.0.37-community

About drivers : I have noticed, in the \Alfresco\tomcat\common\lib\ directory, the following files :
mysql-connector-java-5.0.3-bin.jar
mysql-connector-java-5.1.5-bin.jar

Looks like the 5.0.3 connector might be needed for the same version of MySQL, but the descendant compatibility should work. In fact, I moved the mysql-connector-java-5.0.3-bin.jar file to another directory and restarted everything; and it seems OK.

Not being an expert with Tomcat, I don't know the exact behaviour when having 2 of those .jar files in the same directory, but heck, I deleted the old one and everything seems right.

I'll let you know if that fixed the problem …

a month and half later, some feedback on this issue :

I first thought that deleting the old .jar file would have helped : we didn't experience any problem during 2 weeks or so.

Then, server began to crash again. And now it's like 10 times per day, making it purely impossible to use for work.

Weirdest thing is that we didn't change ANYTHING on the server, except that now we have 3 persons coding on the project instead of 2. Oh yeah and something I forgot to mention in my first post, our server is virtual (VMware). I expanded its resources allocations (doubled memory and CPU allocations) but that doesn't change anything…

I too am running through the same error, and this is quite frustrating to be honest..

Is there a way to get the "real" error behind this error without upgrading the server? I have tried to mess around with my db connections (I use Oracle, and honestly, the connectivity with oracle sucks :? , i much prefer the mysql connectivity, unfortunately its not my decision..) and I dont seem to get it to work.

Please help us not fear "./alfresco.sh start" every time we type it..

You really did run into some errors, this is why you started and stopped alfresco a number of times i see.. I work on linux, and it appears that once alfresco has suffered an error, the stop mechanism doesnt work well, and leaves the tomcat process up and running. You should kill all tomcat process that run, this is what the javax.naming.NameAlreadyBoundException: alfresco/jmxrmi means. There is already a tomcat running with that bean.

Thanks Shlomi, this is a nice input, we'll try that and see what it gives.

Meanwhile, we have found that Tomcat environment was only running with 512 MB memory, we doubled that and are still testing. If some more crashing occurs, we'll check into the tomcat assasination

Please let me know if you manage to get this export/import thing to work, I am also trying different means of attacking it at the moment, currently not very successfully.

I wish someone on the alfresco team will help us with this issue, as it is quite an important one.. :?

More input :

The memory doubling didn't help, Alfresco crashes as much as before.

We have noticed several weird things :
- Analyzing the realtime CPU usage graphs, we see that CPU is at 100% during a few seconds (and that's long, computer-wise) when accessing to ANY web document through Alfresco (even a very simple php page).
- We also note that accessing a page with Firefox produces two "small peaks" of 100% CPU usage, while accessing the same page with IE makes "larger peaks" of 100% CPU usage, which ALWAYS result in an alfresco crashing, with all the errors copied/pasted here above… The only config difference between the two browsers here is a proxy configuration (IE bypasses the proxy to access the alfresco server, while Firefox doesn't). If that config was the problem, problems should occur more with FF than IE !
- I killed all Tomcat processes like Shlomi advised and it doesn't help. The only way to fix this is to restart the server … Note that the BeanException error message can still be found in the logs at the moment the server is crashing, while no Tomcat process is running at all !

I am getting crazy ! :shock:
